I copiedĀ this painting of B.E. Murillo (1618-1682) and decided to do in it acrylic. At that stage I had a lot of the primary colours (yellow, blue and red) mixed in bottles. So I started off to mix three basic colours that I saw in the original painting, and to use them as my ‘mother colours’. What I also liked about the medium is that I could build it up, layer by layer, from light to the dark. The original painting that I worked from is a print on canvas 220 x 300mm. What I noticed is that when you work from a smaller reference, you have to remember that every surface, when it gets larger, can easily turn very flat. So to keep it vibrant you have to put more color/texture onto the flat parts. Luckily I did this one a few years ago, and when I did Paul the Apostle of Rembrandt, I kept this in mind.
